The illustration was conceived as a continuous narrative across the front and back cover: on the front, a woman reads in a boat as the tide comes in; on the back, she is still absorbed in her book after the tide has gone out, leaving the boat beached. The image was also extended to the contents pages and developed into an animated version.
The printed cover was produced with fluorescent inks and gloss varnish and was selected as SPD Cover of the Week by the Society of Publication Designers.
